Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the country.

That ship, dubbed "a new Granma" in reference to the vessel in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to launch the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, drugs, baby formula, cycles and food.

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the country began.
