Well, what did you think of 2025 in your home? Did it seem all as good as people post on Facebook? Full of A-grades for the children and elaborate dress-up gatherings for the grownups? Maybe it felt like a swamp of disappointment with only rare entertaining highlights? Could any part be authentic, or are we all seven-fingered virtual entities with celebrity teeth?
I've corralled the family for a chat, whether they wanted to or not, to debate the paramount thing in twelve months: what titles we played the most. Let's get started:
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"You can't expect my personal ranking."
In the mobile realm, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "searching for adequate healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In real life."
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that I suggested it. Point taken.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into theatre school, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where her character has a thriving utopia with significantly better healthcare than her eldest sister has in the real world.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and ended it at eighty-two percent. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Minecraft
Whenever I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a persistent critic. When he complains, I reply that I am doing this to toughen him up so he can be a man and play games for adults. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is unstoppable. Superior than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted deck building competitive game, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The catch about games that endlessly add to their range is you wake up one day and understand it is all just an attempt to trap you with fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a classic franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could dispatch my issues so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just didn’t have the focused attention to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I aim to experience this in the early morning after evening drinks.
Balatro
I know Balatro was the previous year's sleeper hit, but I was a late adopter. And it is remarkable. It just gets absolutely everything right. Crazy Poker is a brilliant concept, but the abilities behind the different special cards are so imaginative it has become a game I would happily play constantly. Throw in the cleverness of the card design, and this is an true high-water mark of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I received a bit of backlash when I mentioned how a technical issue in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I recognized even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the individual who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I share that as written, because I appreciate the effort, and she is obviously an astute judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a brutally difficult non-linear thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". What a joy. I understand that it is beautiful and is ideal if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my current stage of life. I was around back when many games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was okay when I was a kid, but so was many outdated things.
Toss-up between business deals that sparked debate, and high launch costs. Both morally indefensible and repugnant.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names shouted from the back door at bedtime.
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or phone use, but it aches like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the 90s.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the end of days.
The Witcher 4.
