The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided view of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly American. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
