Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world laments the passing to a authentic original whose legacy on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
