Portugal and Spain are once more battling the aftermath of extensive flooding in the wake of Storm Claudia unleashed torrential downpours and powerful gusts the previous week.

This weather system originated from a region of depressed atmospheric pressure that had previously ushered in early season freezing temperatures and snowfall through the eastern regions of the Canadian territory and the north-eastern United States during the beginning of the eleventh month.

Stormy conditions lasted through the weekend, with a twister devastating a campsite and a nearby hotel in Albufeira in the south in the Algarve region on the weekend's Saturday, fatally injuring an elderly British lady and harming 28 people.

Wider Effects across Europe

This system triggered more extensive impacts across the western European nations. By pulling tropical air from the warmer regions, the system assisted in raising temperatures in south-west France to nearly 30 degrees Celsius, the country's highest recorded autumn temperature.

By Friday, this warm and humid air mass collided with a frigid air system across more northern parts of the continent, forming a band of rain extending from the west of Ireland to the Russian Federation.

In the Britain, this stationary front of rain brought very high rainfall totals, causing severe flooding in the Welsh region.

As this weather phenomenon continues to weaken in the coming days, the frigid air will push south, delivering to Europe its initial glimpse of the winter season.

The Golden State encountered an "atmospheric river" recently, causing heavy rain and high-velocity gusts that provoked flash flooding and mudslides in regions affected by blazes earlier this year.

Over two inches of rain poured down in southern California on Friday, with a further 50mm across extensive areas of California on Saturday.

More than 100mm of rain accumulated over shoreline regions of the state's south in aggregate, attaining a full 200 millimetres in locations at higher elevations.
