NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key platform, did not confirm he would live there promptly following his electoral win in November.

"The choice rested on keeping my family safe and the imperative to directing my complete efforts on implementing the agenda for affordability voters elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community famous for its diverse cultural enclaves and international dining.

"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live there, the community will forever remain within me and the work I do," he said.

A Contentious Issue

During his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his central policy – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

But his critics, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment although he is from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it should be a place for public city functions, and championed a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his humble Astoria apartment.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

City residents see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
