New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities shared video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
