New Year's Celebrants Told to Wrap Up Warm with Wintry Weather Predicted Throughout the UK

Forecasters have indicated an icy start to the new year, with snow expected throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are advised to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Go Ahead In Spite of Forecasts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are expected to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," stated the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Clear but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and good visibility. Readings are expected to be low, so extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Expected to Plummet Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to drop further as snowfall and high winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Alerts Activated

In addition, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this indicated the weather was expected to cause major effects across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
