Iran's military claims to have hit a US naval base in Bahrain, as the country executed missile attacks throughout the Middle East in response for a large-scale and continuing attack against it by the United States and Israeli forces.
Large columns of dark smoke were observed billowing from an area near the headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in Bahrain's capital, Manama. The full scale of any impact is not yet known and the US has yet to issue a statement.
Elsewhere across the region, the UAE, the State of Qatar and Kuwait - which all house American military installations - stated they have intercepted incoming projectiles in their air space.
In Doha, the Qatari Ministry of Defence announced it had intercepted a number of projectiles apparently targeting the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest American base in the Middle East.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard declared it was targeting American facilities and interests as part of military campaign "Truthful Promise 4", in retaliation for the attack on Iran launched by the United States and its ally Israel on Saturday.
That initial attack - initiated at approximately 09:15 Iran time - has so far targeted locations associated with the Iranian leadership, with US President Donald Trump calling on the Iranian people to revolt against the government.
In Israel, sirens were heard nationwide after the Israeli military said it had detected an incoming Iranian missile barrage.
The Ministry of Defence of the UAE said in a statement that the country has been targeted by a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".
"UAE air defence systems engaged the projectiles with great effectiveness and successfully intercepted a number of missiles," it added.
It said debris fell on a populated district in the capital, causing some material damage and the death of one civilian.
The US Air Force operates from Al Dhafra Air Base, south of the Emirati capital, along with the UAE Air Force.
