Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.

The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
