Recent details have emerged concerning the untimely passing of renowned film director Rob Reiner and visual artist Michele Singer Reiner, whose remains were discovered at their Brentwood, Los Angeles home on Sunday.
A source indicates referencing a person close to the family, a therapist arriving for an appointment was the first to notice something was wrong after not being able to enter the house. This individual then contacted the couple's daughter, Romy Reiner, who lives nearby.
Upon entering the house, Romy found her father's body. Reports state she then left the home distraught, unaware at that moment that her mother's body was also present. Her roommate who had gone with her contacted 911. Afterward, first responders found Michele Singer Reiner's body.
Authorities have formally accused the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, with the charges of murder in the first degree, along with the charge related to a weapon, said to be a knife. He is now in custody and denied bail.
The anonymous source challenged several previously reported details. It was stated that while Romy Reiner informed emergency responders that her brother Nick lived in a guesthouse on the estate, she did not name him as a potential suspect at that time.
The source also pushed back against widely reported claims that Rob and Michele Singer Reiner had been especially "concerned" about Nick's actions in the weeks leading up to the incident. The source claimed the family was "accustomed to working through [Nick's] problems together."
This correction also extends to accounts of alleged "unpredictable" behavior by Nick at a party hosted by Conan O'Brien the evening prior to the discovery. While the source stated they were unable to confirm whether Rob had "rebuked" his son at the party, they maintained that suggestions of a "blow-up" between the two were inaccurate.
As stated by law enforcement sources, the coroner had not yet established at that point whether the Reiners died Saturday night or on Sunday. Preliminary media reports suggested the condition of their bodies suggested they had been dead for some hours.
Nick Reiner was apprehended at around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday in the neighbourhood of Exposition Park, roughly 15 miles from the residence. He was set to be arraigned on Tuesday, but his attorney, Alan Jackson, indicated his client had not received medical clearance and would be unable to attend until no sooner than Wednesday.
