British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts down to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
