F1 has revealed the new vocabulary that will be used to describe the advanced features of its revolutionary 2026 regulations.

The racing series is implementing what is considered the most significant regulation change in its illustrious history for the 2026 campaign, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the compulsory introduction of fully sustainable fuels.

The revised engines, which retain the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a significantly increased battery power, necessitating key advancements in the aero packages.

During grand prix events, pilots will tactically deploy ERS energy – including during flying laps – to secure the peak result.

Broad surveys were conducted with a diverse audience, including long-time followers and newcomers, to identify which terms would aid comprehension of the main elements of the new regulations.

The primary aim was to render a series of complex new areas of the sport as straightforward as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for some systems – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the active aerodynamics – have been abandoned in favour of descriptive names that directly explain the primary purpose of the innovation.

Exploring the New Tech

Regulators explain that racers will have increased agency to make decisions regarding power usage, harvesting, and efficiency.

The new regulations introduce a set of functions that will be visually displayed on broadcast screens to enhance the viewers' comprehension of the on-track action.

  • Attack Mode: This takes over from the present overtaking aid. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy accessible when a competitor is less than a second the car ahead to assist with an pass.
  • Extra Push Mode: This is a manual battery discharge from the energy recovery system that can be used in overtaking or defending. It provides the pilot peak output at the push of a button.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be deployed strategically, as the available electrical charge is restricted.

Car Design Evolution

The 2026 cars will be smaller and lighter relative to current models, with a wheelbase shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight decreased by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is expected to drop by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although constructors will inevitably claw this back as they develop their cars.

Drag has been cut by 40%. The cars will employ moveable wing elements – front and rear wings will adjust on the straights to cut resistance and increase straightline speed and return into place for maximum cornering performance.

Tyres will continue to use 18-inch wheel rims, but the rubber compounds will be slimmer, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

Power Unit Revolution

The new power units will have an near-equal balance in power produced by the internal combustion engine and the ERS, a rise from about 20% battery contribution under present rules.

The energy recovery system is streamlined through the elimination of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the complicated and costly unit that generated electricity from the turbo.

Every car on the grid will be obliged to compete on fully sustainable fuel, produced using organic sources or synthetic production methods.
